Squares, Spanish Moss, & Graveyards...
However, I didn't imagine the gorgeous river-walk, or walking beside it on the neat cobblestone paths as giant barges float past carrying mysterious, colorful, boxed cargo. Forsyth Park is beautiful with its wispy Spanish moss covered trees blowing wistfully over the amazing fountain. It was even prettier when I saw it with the green dye flowing through the cool water in honor of St. Patty's day!
Plus, each of Savannah's "21" squares (at the time) hold rich history-- like Tomo Chi-Chi's grave-site, beautiful foliage, and interesting people with their dogs enjoying the scenery. A shaggy, white horse pulled a romantic tour buggy. At night, we felt the fresh breeze by the river, while enjoying a crisp cigar, and the view of the bridge in lights. We dared to peer into the famous Bonaventure cemetery's gates. Not sure if it was an orb or something odd by one of the graves; it definitely was not in the same spot when we visited during the day light. We traipsed into the eclectic shops, got frozen drinks at Wet Willie's, and watched someone make homemade taffy!
We also snuck off to Tybee island! The lighthouse sneaks up on you. Lighthouses are a personal favorite of mine. If there is one within 20 miles I want to hunt it down...The beach was our personal oasis that day; we got to play lifeguard, play voyeur on a girl modeling in the entirely too cold water, and see a gross little seagull butchering a fish.
Beautiful landscapes, priceless history/architecture, and amazing food. I'm not sure anything could have topped that. :-) It is still one of my favorite places I've ever visited. On to the next adventure.
"Like all great travelers, I have seen more than I remember, and remember more than I have seen." ---Benjamin Disraeli
