Well...It Wasn't 6 Months This Time...
But, it was definitely close! We explored a lot locally this summer and early fall. I was motivated and extremely passionate since I would be teaching more classes than ever before and had been told I was on the right track for a tenure track (or at least FTT) position at my community college. TBR cut all adjuncts' hours this fall though (supposedly due to ObamaCare). They don't really wish to pay for benefits for part time workers (not that many could afford to pay for it anyway).
I kept pushing forward though and got another step closer to my Ed.S. I had wonderful learning experiences applying to all kinds of jobs (way outside of the spectrum of what I am used to). One class left and I will graduate May 9!
I continued to eat healthy and use portion control. I didn't lose as much weight as over the summer/ early fall, but it was impossible commuting ~2 hours, plus teaching 4 classes, and taking 2 of my own to keep up ~15 mile bike rides.
My boyfriend took on a seasonal position and has been gone a lot more; therefore, I have had opportunity to accomplish a lot more independently! I found out I got into a program called TNTP on December 5th. This news came literally the morning after some bad news. It is funny how things usually pan out that way.
I didn't make it public through social media. Instead, I decided to simply plug away studying and prepping for it. I have to take 4 Praxis exams, another online class, and a rigorous summer/ year training program (if I get placed in a position) in preparation and it is totally out of the 'comfort' zone I have developed--teaching adults in a college setting. I have been selected to teach ESL to elementary students. Ahh, we'll see how that goes. It is different than anything I have ever done, but I am totally passionate about the classroom!
I loved tutoring and got to meet so many ESL students during my time at MTSU's Writing Center. I will also be tutoring again in two capacities this Spring: Read to Succeed of Rutherford County (Adult ESL Literacy) & my cc's Writing Center. Excited!
I truly believe anyone should have access to an equal education. Equal and equity though I have learned during my Ed.S. are VERY different (along with great info on emotional intelligence [Goleman is my dream education boyfriend]). It takes a lot to struggle for equality!
However, it is totally impossible (or it seems that way) for some to even get to the point to BATTLE for equality. This means they have not had access often due to finances, race, etc...to get equity to get on the same level as equality.
That will be my goal during this program. I am impressed by TNTP because unlike some of their cohorts (TFA-as one example) they do not emphasize the program as a hobby or like charitable work, volunteering, or a stepping stone before grade school or a "real" career in law, non-profit, medical school.
They want individuals who (seem to be) more mature (ok ...older) :/ [admittedly, turning 27 in a few days is getting scary]; they want people with a REAL desire to be in the classroom. Career-changers or those with a burning calling for education. Not hobbyists or people wanting something as a cushion for their resume, CV, or further college applications.
THIS is what I feel I have had failures for in the past. I feel that I was put here to help those less fortunate from poor backgrounds or people trying to mix in with a new/ scary culture. Life is hard. It can be made bearable though with people who genuinely care about your future(s).
I will be that person for my students and I pride myself on learning more and more about my subject matter, humanity, the world, and myself every semester since I began teaching and tutoring since 2011!
Literally, be cheesy. Who cares! Whose life are you living? Be the change you want to see in the world!
